POSITION: School Safety Manager
DEPARTMENT: Operations and School Safety
REPORTS TO: School Safety Director

PURPOSE STATEMENT To provide leadership, maintain the safety, and security of SCEC school buildings and all SCEC students, faculty and support staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The list of duties and responsibilities performed by this position are as follows:

  1. The primary focus of the School Safety Manager is to ensure a safe and peaceful learning environment in all SCEC schools.
  2. The secondary focus of the School Safety Manager is to support the mission of the school district at large and is focused on the development of community building, student citizenship, student leadership, and service learning.
  3. In conjunction with the Director of School Safety, the School Safety Manager coordinates with parent, staff and communities groups to promote a culture of positive behavior. 
  4. In conjunction with the Director of School Safety, and other district staff; the School Safety Manager will develop and implement a district-wide and associated building level safety plans.
  5. Work involves a providing a positive role model to youth and the community.
  6. Acts as a liaison between students, parents, staff, administrators and the public.
  7. Coordinates with school counselors, social workers, and other community members in providing
  8. Presentations as a component of the established SCEC curriculum that is aligned with best practices.
  9. Acts as a mentor to troubled youth, and as a role model that acquaints and informs students of the danger of destructive life decisions, drugs, and alcohol abuse.
  10. Implement district approved educational behavioral improvement programs in order to nurture positive student social growth and a healthy self-respect for others and property in the schools. Special Bulletin #52 June 7, 2016 Page 2
  11.  Works with all relevant community agencies that offer programs to youths and their families and make referrals whenever appropriate.
  12.  Work involves assisting local constabulary wherever necessary in performing their duties.
  13.  Work includes preventive actions within the East Chicago Public School Corporation, including first responder, initial incident, follow-up investigation, and special assignments as needed.
  14. Celebrates and embraces diversity in the community and successfully leverages these towards community building.

 

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The following criteria should be considered when selecting officers for the program:

KNOWLEDGE OF

  • Applicable Federal and State laws, City and County ordinances, and Board of Education policies and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the Juvenile Code and Juvenile Court procedures.

SKILLS IN

  • Leadership in matrix organizations 
  • Shall possess strong communication skills. 
  • Conflict resolution skills. 
  • Creative problem solver. 
  • Using a computer and related software applications. 
  • Using modern office equipment.

ABILITY TO

  • Conduct in-depth investigations in complex and sometimes volatile situations. 
  • Deal firmly and courteously with students, staff and the general public. 
  • Must be able to act without direct supervision and exercise considerable independent judgment d discretion. ? Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups. Special Bulletin #52 June 7, 2016 Page 3 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE ? High School Diploma or GED. Minimum 5-10 years successful experience in local law enforcement or military experience. CERTIFICATIONS ? School Resource Officer training Preferred. Sedentary Work: Sitting and/or driving for long periods of time, standing and/or walking for long periods of time, lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, climbing stairs, kneeling, moving light furniture and/or equipment, walking several hours per day in hallways and outside. Must be able to work in heat and cold (outside seasonal temperatures). Specific vision abilities required by this job include the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to work under stressful conditions.
